.:: Start of new Library Software Development Project ::.
What better way to kick off my article listings with a posting about what I’m currently
doing at work for one of Colorado’s larger higher education institutions,
Colorado State University.
Colorado State University Library
software developers have engineered an application dubbed RAPID that is used by
multiple universities around the nation. This web application, originally
funded by the US Government, was developed to replace pages in thousands
of books damaged by the
flood of 1997 with print outs of digital documents. As time went by,
participating universities transformed this great technology to request digital
copies of articles from journals, bypassing traditional interlibrary loan
methods.
The RAPID web application is currently developed in Perl with a MySQL backend
running on Linux web servers. As expected, the demand for such an application
quickly outgrew the current technology and infrastructure. Plans were put in
place to totally revamp the RAPID software package.
I have the honor of playing a critical role in this awesome software
development project as the chief architect and developer. Bring my object
oriented software development abilities to the table, the team has taken the
first of many steps to developing this great software.
